NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court is set to hear TMC leader Mahua Moitra's appeal against her removal from the Lok Sabha. This comes after the Ethics panel recommended her expulsion due to allegations in the 'cash for query' case.
A BJP MP, Nishikant Dubey, accused Moitra of accepting cash and gifts in exchange for sharing her login details with Darshan Hiranandani to ask specific questions. Moitra referred to the panel's investigation as verbal 'vastraharan'.
The Committee investigated the matter and proposed her expulsion. The lower house voted on this motion on Friday (Dec 8), leading Speaker Om Birla to declare her expulsion. He stated, "The Committee's findings concluded that MP Mahua Moitra's behavior was inappropriate for an MP, justifying her removal."
Subsequently, Moitra filed a plea against the House's decision, which is scheduled for review before Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti.
Addressing her expulsion, Moitra remarked, "At 49 years old, I will continue to challenge you for the next 30 years—inside and outside Parliament. The Ethics panel's decision relies solely on conflicting written testimonies of two individuals. Punishing me for a practice deemed routine, accepted, and encouraged in the Lok Sabha is unjust."
