New Delhi: The Supreme Court has allowed petitions challenging the Places of Worship Act. The court has decided to hear these petitions from October 11. A three-judge bench will hear this important issue. Notices have also been issued by the Supreme Court regarding these petitions.

One of the petitioners has said that the courts of Kashi and Mathura have given verdicts referring to the same Act. However, Chief Justice (CJI) UU Lalit said that the Supreme Court will not stay the ongoing hearings by the courts of Kashi and Mathura. He said that the hearings going on in the district courts should be allowed to go on. CJI Lalit said that no response has been given by the central government in this matter so far. Not only this, the Solicitor General has sought more time to file a reply in this matter.

The Places of Worship Act was passed by Parliament on September 18, 1991. The Place of Worship Act, enacted in 1991, says that a place of worship of any religion that came into existence before August 15, 1947, cannot be converted into a place of worship of another religion. The Act has been mentioned several times in the hearing of Gyanvapi Mosque and the Krishnajanmabhoomi-Idgah case. In such a situation, this law has become important in many big cases.
