According to a top official of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the Taliban had no intentions to assassinate former President Ashraf Ghani after the fall of Kabul in August 2021.

The Taliban's Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar said in an exclusive interview with Afghanistan's state-run television (RTA) that a number of officials and politicians from the previous administration are still living in Kabul "peacefully and no harm has been done to them."

Mullah Hebtullah Akhundzada, the Taliban's highest leader, has issued a broad amnesty that covers to everyone, including the previous President, according to Baradar. Following the Taliban's takeover on August 15, 2021, Ashraf Ghani stated in a video that he fled Afghanistan to avoid violence, the devastation of Kabul, and the killing of another President.

He was referring to the assassination of former President Najibullah by the Taliban in the late 1990s."The international community must release Afghanistan's finances and allow Afghanistan to build commercial and economic relations with other nations," Baradar said during the interview, alluding to the freezing of at least $9 billion in Afghan funds.
