KABUL: Male teachers and high school students in Kandahar province have been asked by the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan to sign a written declaration pledging their adherence to the militant group's extreme version of Islamic Sharia law.

The Taliban's rigorous clothing code for men stipulates that men must wear a turban or an Islamic hat, grow beards, and wear the traditional baggy shirt and pants known as "pirhan tumban" in rural Afghanistan,  RFE/RL reported
Locals claim that failure to sign or abide by the pledge may result in teachers losing their jobs or pupils being expelled from school.

Several people disagree with the requirement that male teachers and pupils in ninth grade and higher take the pledge. For fear of retaliation, a high school student in Kandahar who did not want to be identified remarked, "This is an illogical step and must be firmly discouraged."

I want the Taliban to quit restricting our liberties. Another high school student in the province who claimed to have been compelled to sign the pledge added, "They should stop imposing such extremist notions."

According to RFE/RL reports, the Taliban's commitment is their most recent attempt to control how Afghan men and women present themselves in public. Since gaining control in August 2021, the Taliban has mandated that male government officials don traditional clothing and grow beards or face termination.

Men have sometimes been compelled to attend prayers in various places.

The Taliban has outlawed Western-style attire and hairstyles in various regions of Afghanistan. In addition, the militants have strictly enforced gender segregation in public transportation, government offices, hospitals, and universities.

RFE/RL reported that Couples who eat out in restaurants are often questioned and harassed by the Taliban's notorious morality police.
