Tamil Nadu CB-CID extends its probe to Kerala against Illegal mining

TIRUNELVELI: The CB-CID apprehended former assistant director of Tirunelveli mines and minerals department S Safiya On Saturday, in the district's Kallidaikurichi illicit sand mining case. A bishop and five priests from Kerala have previously been arrested in the case.

Safiya was allegedly involved in a sand mining case in Pottal, near Kallidaikurichi, in 2019. She was detained on Saturday and taken into judicial prison for 15 days after appearing before Judicial Magistrate 5.

Manuvel George, a Kerala native, was apprehended after it was discovered that he had exploited a plot of land in Pottal, South Kallidaikurichi village, by quarrying river sand from the Vandal Odai check dam. On the land, Manuvel had permission to store, process, and consume raw stone, gravel, crusher dust, and m-sand.

When the site was inspected, the then-Sub Collector of Cheranmahadevi estimated that 27,773.66 cubic metres of sand had been unlawfully extracted and transferred for commercial purposes. Under the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Mines and Minerals Concession Rules, 1959, Manuvel was fined Rs 9,57,21,578 in September 2019.

The case was then transferred from the Kallidaikurichi police station to the CB-CID by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. In the case, the CB-CID recently detained a bishop and six priests from Kerala.
