Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has called on External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to take decisive steps to secure the release of 35 fishermen detained by the Sri Lankan Navy. In a letter sent on Saturday, Stalin expressed deep concern over the arrest of the fishermen from Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu, which occurred on August 9. The Sri Lankan Navy also seized four fishing boats belonging to the detained fishermen.

Stalin highlighted that a recent meeting with MPs and fishermen representatives had already discussed similar issues, including the loss of two fishermen. Despite these discussions, the Chief Minister lamented that there has been no significant relief or resolution to the problem. He stressed that the ongoing detentions are inflicting severe hardship on the affected families and creating a pervasive sense of fear and uncertainty in coastal communities. The psychological and financial impact on these families is substantial, making it increasingly difficult for them to sustain their traditional livelihoods.

The Chief Minister emphasized the need for stronger diplomatic efforts to ensure the immediate release of the fishermen and their boats. He called for the central government to prioritize the safety and security of coastal communities and to implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Stalin expressed hope that the central government will act decisively to facilitate the release and repatriation of the detained fishermen and their vessels, thus alleviating the distress faced by the affected families.
