Chennai: The Tamil Nadu State local body election has been cancelled by the Madras High Court, due the irregularities with the poll notification.

On September 25, the dates of the local body elections were released that it will be conducted on October 17 and 19. But, the Elections Commission's (EC) announcement were not clear as to which wards had been given or Scheduled Castes and which wards were given for women competitors.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam filed an appeal at Madras high Court and seeked it to interfere into the subject. After listing to the arguments, Justice Kirubakaran affirmed that a notice approved on September 26, 2016 has been nullified for non-compliance of Rule of the Tamil Nadu Panchayat (Election) Rule, 1995. With that the EC had been asked by the high court to provide fresh notifications and to complete the elections before 30th December.
