Tamil Nadu to set up Rs 300 cr Botanical garden

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government plans to create a botanical garden near Chennai for Rs 300 crore in collaboration with London's Kew Gardens, said the state Finance Minister P Thiaga Rajan.

Rajan said the botanical gardens serve as bio-diversity centres as well as public recreational locations while presenting the state budget for 2022-23 to the state Assembly.

"In light of this, the government plans to build a botanical garden near Chennai for Rs 300 crore in collaboration with London's Kew Gardens. A full project report would be created for this purpose," he said.

In addition, the government has chosen to reconstruct the Guindy Children's Park to create a Children's Nature Park at a cost of Rs 20 crore, which will house birds, butterflies, and animals, in order to raise awareness about forests and wildlife among young children.

This year, he noted, a complete project report will be prepared. The government  will establish the 'Tamil Nadu Green Climate Change Fund' to fund climate change efforts, mitigation, and greening projects, he said..

The government will execute "Project Nilgiri Tahr" with an initial allocation of Rs 10 crore for the conservation of animals, growth of their habitat, and public awareness.
