Lucknow: In the 29th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, India clashed with England at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. England won the toss and elected to field first.

During this match, the Indian cricket team paid tribute to former captain Bishan Singh Bedi by wearing black armbands. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed this gesture. Bishan Singh Bedi passed away in Delhi on October 23 after a prolonged illness. Bedi had captained India in 22 test matches and took 266 wickets in 67 test matches. He had an illustrious first-class cricket career, amassing 1560 wickets. Bedi also served as the mentor to several talented spinners, including Maninder Singh and Murali Karthik.

Bedi achieved the distinction of taking five wickets in an innings 14 times and taking 10 wickets in a match once. His best bowling performance in an innings was 7/98. Bedi also managed the Indian cricket team during their tours of New Zealand and England in 1990. At the time of his retirement from cricket, Bishan Singh Bedi held the record for the most Test wickets taken by an Indian bowler.
