NEW DELHI: Union Minister Anurag Thakur declared on Monday that terrorism in Jammu & Kashmir had been come down since 2014 due to surgical strikes and other strict steps taken by the  Narendra Modi government.

Thakur, while addressing the media, Thakur  said that there had been a 168% decrease in terrorist occurrences and an 80% decrease in violent extremist activity in the northeast. Thakur asserted that the government would continue to take harsh measures against such extreme organisations despite the PFI's ban.

The Union Minister criticised Pakistan for openly speaking in favour of terrorism. Thakur asserted that with the tremendous infrastructure development, peace had been built in the states of J&K and the northeast coupled with internal security.

Thakur said that the conviction rate in cases of terror financing had increased to 94%

Holding the Congress responsible for the state of affairs in the northeastern states, Thakur said the party worked on the Look East strategy but for many years put off development initiatives. He continued by saying that the 50-year-old projects in question were being finished by the current administration and referred to basic infrastructure as a gift from the Modi-led administration.

Thakur said that 6,000 militants had surrendered since 2014, with the rate of civilian casualties coming down by 89%. He also mentioned a 265% drop in Maoist incidents.
