In fact, India's highest sports award 'Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award' has now been renamed after Major Dhyan Chand. In a tweet on Friday, Prime Minister Modi wrote, "In the middle of the moments that have made the country proud, many Indians have also urged that the name of Khel Ratna award be dedicated to Major Dhyan Chand Ji. In view of the sentiments of all, its name is now being awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.''

Major Dhyan Chand, known as the same 'hockey wizard,' had won India a gold medal at the Olympics 3 consecutive times. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is India's highest honor in the world of sports. The award was named after former PM Rajiv Gandhi. The Khel Ratna Award was started in the year 1991-92. The honor was established for appreciation and awareness in the field of sports. Chess Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand was the first player to receive the award.
