Ranchi: To increase its revenue, the Jharkhand government is going to resort to liquor. An official said that the Jharkhand government is going to take control of the wholesale and retail sales of liquor to increase the annual revenue collection from Rs 1,800 crore to Rs 3,000 crore in three years.
On Wednesday, the state cabinet allowed four major amendments in the excise policy related to the rules of wholesale and retail sale of liquor and other related matters. The State Excise and Prohibition Department has earlier taken the services of an agency to prepare a blueprint for promoting the sale of liquor. State Excise Secretary Vinay Kumar Choubey said that the amendments would help in checking the complaints of illegal sale of liquor and overpricing.
Along with this, Choubey said that now instead of 75 godowns in 5 divisions of the state, there will be 5 godowns, which will be under the control of JSBCL (Jharkhand State Beverages Corporation Limited) and will be operated by a private agency. The number of retail outlets will be increased to 1,500 from the existing 750. These shops will be under JSBCL. Choubey said that we will have placement agencies, which will give us quality manpower and they will also be made financially responsible for any lack of revenue collection from the shops. He said that Quick Response (QR) codes would be used to deal with illegal sales and overpriced. Consumers can find out the price, manufacture and other important details through the QR code printed on the liquor bottles. He said that now the size of the bottles of foreign and country liquor will be the same and plastic bottles will not be used.
