Kakinada: Low quality vegetables are being sold at high prices in all Rythu markets in East Godavari district during the festive season. Vegetable prices have increased nearly four times since the beginning of October. Traders have alleged torrential rains in the district and damage to crops. There has been a decline in the arrival of vegetables at Rythu markets and retail shops in the district. Traders say that the prices of all kinds of vegetables have suddenly increased due to heavy rains. At the same time, higher diesel prices also increase the transportation cost, which has a huge impact on the prices of vegetables.

Brinjal is selling from Rs 38 to Rs 48 per kg. Whereas good quality brinjal costs Rs 80 per kg in the open market. Tomato is being sold for Rs 35 a kg in Rythu market and Rs 50 a kg in the open market. The cost of chilli is Rs 54 per kg. The prices of vegetables like beans, cabbage, carrots, drum sticks, cauliflower and others have also gone up.

Tomato supply from the district has been stopped since April. They are importing tomatoes from Madanapalli and Kanigiri villages in Chittoor district. 10 to 50 tonnes of tomatoes are needed for the consumption of the people. But only 5 to 6 tonnes of tomatoes are imported and hence the prices are skyrocketing in the district. Vendors increased the prices of vegetables at Gandhinagar and RTC Complex Rythu markets in Kakinada on Sunday.
