Hyundai Mobis, a Hyundai Motor subsidiary, claims that its e-corner module contains a 90-degree turning wheel that allows the vehicle to be manoeuvred easily in confined spaces. The Hyundai Mobis e-corner module is a single block that houses an electric motor, braking system, suspension, and steering.

The Korean supplier claims to have successfully created a prototype of an electric corner module that integrates the steering, braking, suspension, and steering systems at each wheel in a press release. This corner module was initially shown as a concept system at CES 2018 in Las Vegas, where it is still in the early stages of development. Hyundai Mobis has redesigned the technology and created the electronic control unit (ECU) that regulates it over the last three years in order to make it a feasible product that can be used in actual automobiles.

Traditional mechanical axles can only turn the wheel around 30 degrees, however e-corner modules can turn the wheel up to 90 degrees. This feature enables for novel vehicle manoeuvres like crab mode or complete rotation on its axis without moving the wheels.

Cars typically allow for a 30 degree rotation. In most cases, drivers struggle to manoeuvre down short alleyways and park in cramped areas, making it impossible for passengers to get in and out.  "Hyundai Mobis will begin placing mass production orders from major automakers for implementation once the reliability verification and feasibility studies on mass production are finished," the firm stated in a statement.

By 2023, the Seoul-based firm wants to construct a skateboard to gather the four e-corner modules, with the goal of merging them with self-driving vehicles two years later. The corner modules are now being tested to ensure their dependability. Hyundai Mobis is doing a feasibility assessment for future mass manufacturing at the same time.
