NEW DELHI: According to a report released by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, the best-performing states in the Social Progress Index (SPI) are Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and Goa (EAC-PM).

Aizawl (Mizoram), Solan (Himachal Pradesh), and Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) have emerged as the top 3 best-performing districts, as per the report released by EAC-PM Chairman Bibek Debroy.

The report was required by the EAC-PM and was created by the Institute for Competitiveness and the Social Progress Imperative.

SPI is a thorough tool designed to be a comprehensive assessment of the social development the nation has made at the national and sub-national levels.

The indicator complements the traditional metrics of economic growth and development, which are understood to be essential to sustaining economic growth over the long term,an official release read.

SPI evaluates how well states and districts do in relation to three aspects of social progress: fundamental human needs, pillars of wellbeing, and opportunity.

The component of fundamental human needs evaluates how well states and districts perform in terms of housing, water, sanitation, personal safety, and basic medical care.

The foundations of wellbeing dimension evaluates the nation's development in relation to the elements of fundamental knowledge access, information and communication access, health and wellness access, and environmental quality access.

The dimension of opportunity focuses on aspects of personal rights, freedom and choice, inclusiveness, and access to advanced education.
