New Delhi: Amid rising corona cases in India, a new study on the Omicron virus has emerged in Delhi, the results of which are shocking. The new corona strain Omicron first surfaced in South Africa and then spread around the world. It is reported that foreign trips are responsible for this. Omicron virus was also detected in several persons returning from abroad in the country. But the story of the Omicron infected people in Delhi is saying something else. The new study reveals that 60 per cent of omicron positive patients in Delhi have not travelled abroad.

More than 60 per cent of the people infected with the omicron form of corona infection in Delhi did not travel abroad nor did they come under the contact of international passengers. This shows that this new form of corona led to a very rapid spread of infection. This was revealed in a study conducted by the Institute of Liver and Binary Sciences (ILBS), run by the Delhi government.

This is probably the first study in the country to provide evidence of the community spread of omicron. It looked at genome sequencing data on virus cases collected from five cities of Delhi, South Delhi, South East, South West, West and East Delhi between 25th November and 23rd December last year. A total of 332 samples were sent to ILBS from all the testing laboratories in 5 districts and out of these, 264 samples passing 'quality testing' were analysed.
