KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday show-caused its minister Srikanta Mahata after he claimed that party celebrity MPs and MLAs are ‘looting’ and the honest workers of TMC are being ‘ignored’ by the party top leaders.
After a video showing him criticising the morality and decency of the party's star leaders went viral, Srikant Mahata, a three-time Trinamool Congress MLA and West Bengal's minister of state for consumer affairs, was censured and given a show-cause notice by his party.
The minister apparently withdrew his statement and issued an apology as a result of the show-cause letter.
"Money is being stolen by leaders like Mimi Chakraborty, Nusrat Jahan, June Malia, and Saayoni Ghosh. However, they are viewed as resources for the party. I had been attempting to inform our senior leaders, such as Abhishek Banerjee and Subrata Bakshi, of this notice. But they would not accept that "According to the viral video, Mahata said. All of them are well-known actors in Bengali television and film serial circuits.
Malia is an elected MLA from the Midnapore Assembly constituency, whereas Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan represent the Trinamool Congress in the Lok Sabha from the Jadavpur and Basirhat constituencies, respectively. Saayoni Ghosh, on the other hand, is the West Bengal state president of the Trinamool Congress's youth organisation.
The party leadership quickly censured him and also issued a show-cause notice after being informed by the leaders he mentioned that the video had gone viral.
Ultimately, Mahata backtracked and withdrew his statement, as said by Trinamool Congress's West Midnapore district coordinator, Ajit Maiti. "Mahata has withdrawn his statement and also apologised for the same. He has explained that he made such statements being driven by emotions," Maiti.
