TN CM launches 3 mobile Amma Canteens in Chennai

In an effort to provide food at a subsidized price the TN government is setting up more supply centres. On its path, TN CM Edappadi K Palaniswami has inaugurated three mobile Amma Canteens today. The sources say, the mobile Amma Canteens will function from 7 am to 10 am in the morning for breakfast, with idly costing Rs 1 and pongal costing Rs 5 on the menu.

An official said, “The mobile Amma Canteens will not give food in parcels.The mobile unit also has facilities to dispose of waste and  has an inbuilt hand washing facility". The main target area of these mobile vehicles would be near construction workers and labourers were present in large numbers, says the Corporation officer. The office further added that the CM has launched 3 trucks in the first phase now, 50 more trucks are expected to come soon.

The civic body will use INR 100 crore allocated for the Amma Canteens this year will be used to purchase the vehicles. Amma canteen was started in 2013 by the Late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, to provide food at affordable rates to lakhs of people in the city and districts. Around one crore people in the state benefited from the Amma Canteens during the COVID-19 lockdown, which continues to function even other restaurants and food outlets were closed.
