New Delhi: Today is the death anniversary of Param Vir Chakra awardee, Brigadier Hoshiyar Singh Dahiya. He showed indomitable courage in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, for which he is still remembered with pride. Brigadier Hoshiyar Singh was born on May 5, 1937, in Sisana village of Sonipat district of Haryana to Chaudhary Hira Singh in a Hindu Jat family. He served with dedication in the Indian Army and retired as a Brigadier. He was awarded India's highest military honor Param Vir Chakra. He died of natural causes on December 6, 1998.

After completing his schooling and one year of studies at Jat College in Rohtak, Hoshiyar Singh Dahiya joined the Army. He was commissioned into the Grenadier Regiment of the Indian Army on 30 June 1963. His first posting was in NEFA (North-East Frontier Agency). In the Indo-Pakistan war of 1965, he took part from the Rajasthan region. During the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971, the third Grenadier was tasked with constructing a bridge over the Basantar River in the Shakgarh sector from December 15-17, 1971. The river was covered with deep land mines on both sides and was well protected by the Pakistani army. Commander 'C' Company Major Hoshiyar Singh was ordered to occupy the Pakistani territory of Jarpal. When Major Hoshiyar Singh moved forward, the Pakistani army retaliated. During the attack, Major Hoshiyar Singh kept running from one ditch to another to encourage his soldiers to stand fast.  

As a result, Major Hoshiyar Singh's company inflicted heavy damage on the enemy despite heavy attacks by the Pakistan Army and thwarted all their attacks. Despite being seriously injured, Major Hoshiyar Singh refused to retreat till the ceasefire. During this campaign, Major Hoshiyar Singh displayed the most distinguished bravery, incomparable fighting spirit, and leadership in the highest traditions of the Army, for which he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
