MIZORAM: Seventeen individuals lost their lives as a result of a tragic incident wherein an under-construction railway bridge collapsed in the region of Sairang, located approximately 20 kilometers from Aizawl in Mizoram. This calamity unfolded around 10 am, and it is feared that numerous others may still be trapped under the debris.
Around 35 to 40 workers were present at the site when the collapse occurred, adding to the concern about the potential number of individuals who could be trapped. As of now, seventeen bodies have been recovered from the wreckage, but a significant number of people remain unaccounted for, as stated by a police official.
The Chief Minister of Mizoram conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones due to this tragic event. He also expressed his wishes for a swift recovery for those who sustained injuries. In a post shared on platform X (formerly known as Twitter), the Chief Minister wrote, "Today, a railway overpass under construction near Aizawl in Sairang collapsed, leading to the unfortunate demise of at least 17 workers. The rescue operation is actively ongoing. This grievous incident deeply saddens me, and my thoughts are with all the grieving families. I also extend my hopes for the rapid recuperation of the injured. I am grateful to the many individuals who have come forward in large numbers to participate in the rescue endeavors."
The mishap at the bridge deeply saddened Prime Minister Modi, prompting him to offer his sympathies to those who lost their dear ones in this tragedy. Additionally, the Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to be provided to the families of each deceased person, along with Rs. 50,000 for the injured.
The official statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on platform X read, "The mishap involving the bridge in Mizoram has left me profoundly pained. My heartfelt condolences to the individuals who are grieving the loss of their loved ones. I hope for a swift recovery for those who are injured. The ongoing rescue efforts are receiving all possible support. From the PMNRF, a relief of Rs. 2 lakh will be granted to the families of each departed, while the injured will receive Rs. 50,000. - PM."
