A train derailed near "The Hague" (Situated on the west coast of the Netherlands) in the early hours of Tuesday, April 5, two cars into a field next to the tracks Dutch emergency services said. One person died and some 30 passengers were injured, many of them seriously.
Video photos showed people navigating a shallow drainage canal that ran beside the rails using improvised bridges and ladders in the pitch black to reach the downed train. The railway cars' windows were shattered in large numbers. It was unclear if that occurred during the collision or as passengers were attempting to flee.
Two of the strikingly coloured train cars—bright yellow and blue—came to rest parallel to the rails across the narrow canal and partially in a field. The front of the train, as it appeared to be, was severely harmed. The train partially derailed in other places. At the time of the collision, the four-carriage passenger train was hauling around 50 passengers.
At the rails connecting the cities of Leiden and The Hague, a goods train was also halted on the tracks not far from the passenger train's debris.
It was not immediately obvious what caused the accident that occurred at 3:25 a.m. (0125 GMT) in Voorschoten, close to The Hague.
A passenger train, a freight train, and a construction crane were all engaged in a collision, according to a statement from the railway operator NS. However, the business provided no other information.
Similar to everyone else, I am full of questions and we want to know exactly what happened," NS CEO Wouter Koolmees wrote in a release. “A thorough investigation must be carried out. At the moment, all attention is focused on the health of our travelers and colleagues.
