SUDAN: According to local authorities, armed confrontations between tribal groups in the Kirainik district of Sudan's west Darfur province have resurfaced. As per reports,  at least 15 people have been killed, scores have been injured, and hundreds of homes have been torched in the latest clashes that began on Friday.

Tribal fighting erupted in the Kirainik area, nearly 80 kilometres east of El Geneina, the capital city of west Darfur state, for the third time in two years, source said.

"Kirainik was under siege from all sides. Inside the area, the situation is extremely challenging "In a statement, Mohamed Zakaria, the Acting Secretary-General of the West Darfur State Government, said.

According to the Darfur Bar Association, the fighting occurred after two herdersmen were slain by an unknown assailant on Friday, prompting a revenge attack by the victims' families in the area. The latest battle has displaced about 20,000 people in the area.  Sudanese authorities dispatched armed soldiers and jets to the crisis zone on Saturday.

"The recurrent transgressions demonstrate the government's failure to perform its duty toward the public," the Sudanese resistance committees, a country-wide opposition group, said in a statement on Sunday, adding that militia gatherings and movements were still visible around Kirainik.

On his Facebook page, Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minnawi emphasised the importance of regular soldiers performing their tasks in maintaining security and stability in Darfur.

For years, efforts to stop Darfur's tribal disputes, which have become a persistent concern for the region's people and authorities, have failed. Sudan has been in a political crisis since Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the General Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces, announced a state of emergency and dissolved the Sovereign Council and government on October 25, 2021.
