Agartala: The Bengali community in Tripura has stood up against the settlement of Bru-displaced as permanent residents in the state. The community leaders are demanding that the displaced be sent back to Mizoram. They say that settling them in the state will give a boost to communal oppression in the northeast. Recently, a four-party agreement was reached in New Delhi for permanent settlement of Bru migrants in the state.

Chatterjee, leader of the Bengali Displaced Forum, while addressing a huge rally in Kanchanpur subdivision town of North Tripura district, said that Bru-displaced should be opposed to settle in the state. Bru refugees are permanent residents of Mizoram, if they can be resettled back in Mizoram then why are they being settled in Tripura.

Now, the Bengali community already inhabited in the state will be displaced to permanently settle Bru-refugees in the state. Those who are already permanent on their land will now have to vacate their permanent land and stay in the nearby police camp. The State Government has not yet announced any rehabilitation package for the displaced Bengali families. The government is currently brainstorming on this demand.
