Tripura CM orders probe into electrocution deaths during Rath Yatra

TRIPURA: In response to the unfortunate incident during the 'Ulto Rath' procession in Kumarghat, Unakoti district, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has taken immediate action by initiating a comprehensive investigation. 

Tragically, seven individuals, including three children and three women, lost their lives due to electrocution when Lord Jagannath's chariot made contact with high-tension power transmission lines.

Moreover, sixteen individuals sustained injuries during the procession. To address this distressing situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged financial support. The families of the deceased will receive Rs. 2 lakh each from the PM Relief Fund, while Rs. 50,000 will be provided to the injured.

In addition to the Prime Minister's assistance, Chief Minister Saha has also announced compensations. The kin of the deceased will receive Rs. 4 lakh, individuals with over 60% burn injuries will receive Rs. 2.5 lakh, and those with 40-60% burn injuries will receive Rs. 75,000.

Expressing his condolences, Prime Minister Modi conveyed his sympathies to the affected families and the injured individuals. He assured that the local administration is diligently providing support and aid to those affected by the mishap, and he wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. The Prime Minister's Office shared this message on Twitter.

Chief Minister Saha promptly reached Kumarghat to meet the injured individuals in the hospital and personally oversee their treatment. The state government will bear all the expenses for the medical care of the injured devotees. If necessary, patients will be transferred to other states for specialized treatment. Additionally, an official enquiry, led by the Unakoti district magistrate, has been initiated. The findings of the report will guide the appropriate actions to be taken by the government.

Furthermore, State Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath has instructed the DGM of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd, Kumarghat, to conduct an independent investigation into the incident. The report will be submitted to the government without delay.

It is indeed a tragic occurrence, and the entire state mourns the loss of lives during the Ulto Rath Yatra. The government remains committed to extending support, providing medical aid, and ensuring that a thorough investigation takes place to prevent such incidents in the future.
