Bangalore: Hubballi-Dharawad police took two men, identified as Sadiq Imam Saab Tadakoda and Adil, both residents of Dharwad, into custody for their social media posts justifying the murder of Neha by Fayaz. Neha was stabbed to death by Fayaz after she declined his proposal of a relationship on April 18th at BV Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering and Technology in Hubbali.

Arrests Made Following Complaint by Pro-Hindu Activists
Sadiq and Adil were arrested after a complaint was filed by pro-Hindu activists at Vidyagiri Police Station. They had posted on social media claiming Neha and Fayaz were in a relationship. Several posts with captions such as “Justice For Love” and “Justice For True Love” went viral on social media, justifying Fayaz’s actions. Most of these posts were made by Islamists.

Journalists and Social Media Posts Propagating False Information
Some journalists also attempted to indirectly propagate that Neha and Fayaz were in a relationship. Nabila Jamal, a journalist, posted a photo montage where Neha and Fayaz were seen together, possibly from Neha’s now-deleted Instagram account. The video contained India Today’s logo.

Details of the Neha Murder Case
Neha Hiremath, daughter of Congress Corporator Niranjan Hiremath, was stabbed to death by Fayaz on April 18th for allegedly refusing his proposal.

The attack occurred at B V Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering and Technology in Hubbali, where Neha was studying in the first year of MCA. Fayaz, the assailant, was a BCA student of the same college and was a classmate of Neha. He hails from Savadatti in Belagavi district. While Neha continued her studies in MCA after completing BCA, Fayaz discontinued.

According to reports, Fayaz was waiting for Neha to come out of the college and attacked her with a knife. He stabbed her multiple times in the neck, an act caught on CCTV camera. After the stabbing, which left Neha profusely bleeding, Fayaz fled the scene with the weapon in his hand. Fayaz was arrested by the police following the murder. Soon after the incident, support for Fayaz poured onto social media, claiming it was not a case of “love jihad” but “true love”.
