KIEV: Russia-backed hackers were behind a huge cyber attack on Ukraine's power grid, which was foiled. According to The Record, Ukrainian officials said they were able to repel an attack on an energy complex with the help of researchers from cybersecurity firm ESET and Microsoft.

"They uncovered a new variation of Industroyer," according to the report, "an infamous piece of malware that was utilised by the Sandworm APT organisation in 2016 to interrupt power in Ukraine."  The hackers used 'Industroyer' to attack "many infrastructural elements," including high-voltage electrical substations, PCs at the site, network infrastructure, and server equipment running Linux operating systems, according to the Computer Emergency Response Team of Ukraine .

The government agency stated, "The group planned to shut down computers that controlled substations and equipment belonging to a particular power firm." A wide range of malware was used in this attempted attack. "Ukraine has been the victim of cyberattacks aimed at their key infrastructure once again. This current Industroyer campaign comes after several waves of wipers that have been targeting Ukraine's various sectors "In a statement, ESET added.

Last month, Ukraine successfully countered a huge cyber-attack on the country's vital IT infrastructure.
