Balrampur: The rejoining of the Samajwadi Party back after 17 years of former Balrampur MP and senior leader Rizwan Zaheer in Uttar Pradesh has brought about a new change in the political equation of the district. Rizwan Zaheer, who contested independent elections and became a MLA in 1989, has now rejoined the SP by 2021, travelling to all major political parties. Political experts are looking at Rizwan Zaheer's move by linking it to the political future of his daughter Jeba Rizwan.

Rizwan Zaheer has been a 3-time MLA and 2-time Lok Sabha MP. There was a time when Rizwan Zaheer was counted among the stalwarts of Purvanchal. Rizwan Zaheer was very popular among the masses for his glamorous image, but over time Rizwan Zaheer not only reduced his political credibility but also drifted away from his close ones. In 1989, Rizwan Zaheer contested from Tulsipur assembly constituency as an independent candidate and reached the assembly for the first time.

Rizwan Zaheer then took over the reins of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Rizwan Zaheer became an MLA from BSP twice. In 1996, he contested from Balrampur Lok Sabha seat as an independent candidate but lost. In 1998, Rizwan Zaheer contested the Balrampur Lok Sabha elections on the Samajwadi Party symbol and became an MP for the first time. Zaheer was once again elected as an MP from Balrampur Lok Sabha as a Samajwadi Party candidate in 1999. Zaheer returned to BSP after clashing with SP in 2004, but could not win any elections after that, now again joins SP to get his old reputation.
