Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has recently hinted at the state government's readiness to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) this year. During discussions with reporters in Dehradun on December 31, Dhami mentioned that the draft of the UCC would be available next year, expressing the government's eagerness to enforce UCC laws in Uttarakhand at the earliest opportunity. In the final stages of the 2022 assembly polls, Dhami surprised many by pledging to implement the UCC in the state.

On May 27, 2022, following the BJP government's consecutive victory in the 2022 Assembly Polls, a five-member committee was formed to draft the implementation plan for the UCC in the state. Chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, the committee included former Delhi High Court Judge Pramod Kohli, social activist Manu Gaur, retired IAS Shatrughan Singh, and Doon University Vice Chancellor Surekha Dangwal.

The committee promptly initiated its work, gathering opinions from various sections of society to prepare the draft proposal for UCC implementation. As of now, the committee has nearly completed its task and is poised to submit its report to the state government, with sources suggesting the submission may occur in the second half of January.

Following the committee's report submission, the government will undertake the necessary formalities for UCC implementation, with the report first tabled in the state assembly. The winter session of the state assembly is anticipated to convene after the conclusion of Makar Sankranti on January 15.

The UCC aims to establish a common set of laws governing marriages, inheritance, adoption, and other matters, promoting uniformity for all citizens irrespective of their religion, gender, or sexual orientation. If the UCC takes effect early this year, it could emerge as a significant issue in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha Polls.
