NEW DELHI: Vedanta Aluminium, India's largest aluminium manufacturer, has committed to procuring 380 MW of renewable energy for its smelters over the long term.

The Aluminium Smelter in Jharsuguda, Odisha, will receive 180 MW of this renewable energy, while the Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO) in Korba, Chhattisgarh, would receive 200 MW. This will be accomplished through a Power Delivery Agreement (PDA) between Vedanta Limited (Aluminium Business) and Special Purpose Vehicles, which are affiliates of Sterlite Power Technologies Pvt Ltd (SPTPL), a company that provides renewable energy (hybrid) solutions such as solar, wind, and storage.

This project has the potential to cut Vedanta Aluminium's GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions by 15,00,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year once it is operational. Vedanta Aluminium is taking a three-pronged approach to decarbonizing its operations in order to reach Net Zero by 2050: increasing the amount of renewable energy in its energy mix, improving operational efficiencies to reduce energy consumption, and rapidly transitioning to cleaner fuels and technologies.
