Only very few people would know about Smt. Vijay Laxmi Pandit, who belongs to the Gandhi-Nehru family, whereas has contributed greatly to public service before and after the freedom struggle. Vijayalakshmi Pandit was the sister of India's first PM Jawaharlal Nehru and aunt of Indira Gandhi. She resigned from the Congress and joined the Janata Party opposing the emergency of his niece and then PM Indira Gandhi.

Vijay Laxmi Pandit was born on August 18, 1900, in the Gandhi-Nehru family. Her education was mainly at home. Like Brother Jawaharlal, his early life was like a princess. She was educated in English at home. She was interested in education as well as politics, literature, horse riding, etc. Pt. Jawaharlal was 11 years younger than Nehru and 7 years older than her sister Krishna. She started her studies in Allahabad. Then, she fought with Gandhi and Nehru in the freedom struggle. She was active in politics with her first father Motilal Nehru and later brother Jawaharlal Nehru.

Influenced by Gandhiji, she too started participating in movements for freedom. She was also tortured several times for this. But she continued to fight for freedom for the country. In 1937, she was elected to the provincial assembly of the United Provinces. Vijay Laxmi Pandit becomes the first Indian woman to become a cabinet minister. She was the first woman in the world to become president of the UN General Assembly in 1953. Vijay Laxmi Pandit became India's first ambassador to the Soviet Union. She was then made ambassador to the US. She became India's first Ambassador to the United Nations.
