The retired wing Commander Dr Vijayalakshmi Ramanan, well-known as the first woman commissioned officer of the Indian Air Force, has died at the age of 96. She has died of old age ailments on October 18 at her daughter’s home, her son-in-law S L V Narayan said.

She is a  recipient of Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM). She was born in February 1924. She was commissioned in the Army Medical Corps on August 22, 1955 and was seconded to the Air Force with effect from the same day. She has served as a gynecologist at various Air Force Hospitals. she also had attended to the troops wounded during wars and performed administrative duties. In August 1972, she was promoted to the rank of Wing Commander. In 1977 she was honoured with the Vishist Seva Medal. IN February 1979 she has retired from her job.

Her husband late K V Ramanan also served the Indian army, he was an Indian Airforce Officer. Her family includes a daughter and a son. She is well trained in Carnatic music. She was an artist with the All India Radio at a very young age.
