Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, badminton player PV Sindhu, boxer MC Mary Kom, runner Dutee Chand and para-badminton player Mansi Joshi are in the race for the 'BBC Best Indian Female Player of the Year' award for the first time. The award will be given on 8 March where the winner will be decided through online voting on the BBC's 6 Indian language websites. These elections will be held till 18 February 2020.

According to reports, Vinesh confirmed her ticket to Tokyo Olympics by winning a bronze medal at the World Championship (2019) held at Noor Sultan, while Sindhu became the first Indian player to win the World Championship title last year.
