Violence erupts in Manipur after Amit Shah's visit, 16 injured in attack by Kuki militants

Imphal: Two villages under West Imphal district were attacked by Kuki militants armed with weapons and bombs after Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Manipur, police said on Sunday. At least 16 people were injured in the attack. At least 16 people were injured in heavy firing in Fayeng area of Imphal East bordering Kangpokpi district on Friday, police said.

Most of the injured are from the Valley and the condition of one person is said to be critical. According to the information, the injured are being treated at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences. State police and Manipur Rifles personnel deployed in two villages of Fayeng and Kangchup Chingkhong also retaliated. There was fierce firing from both sides for more than 4 hours late at night.

In the encounter, the police chased the militants into the nearby hills. Those injured in the encounter were taken to the Regional Institute of Medical Science Hospital in Imphal. The condition of two people is said to be critical at the moment. Police officials and local residents said the encounter started around 9.30 am on Friday and continued till late in the evening.
