Andhra Pradesh: Amalapuram Kerala The people of this region are completely dependent on the sale of coconut. Konaseema is known for its coconut plantation. Kothapeta Mandal, a village in East Godavari district, has about 880 coconut trees in 15 acres, known as 'Black Scorch'. Destroyed due to strange disease.The farmers allege that the brackish water from the borewell dug by ONGC is the cause of the disease.

Concerned about the spread of the disease to other trees, many coconut farmers requested the concerned scientists to find a way to eradicate the disease. The Chief Minister directed the officials to set up an expert committee to find out the causes of the disease and solve the problem. Experts from YSR Horticulture University visited the area and studied about the nature and cause of the disease. With their expertise, they can successfully prevent the disease from spreading to nearby trees. The experts also did water analysis and soil test, but they could not diagnose the nature of the disease precisely.

The MLAs and officials of Konaseema brought the issue to the notice of Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. The farmers appealed to the Chief Minister to not only take steps to check the spread of the disease, but also to come to his rescue. Coconut trees attracted black blight disease in Konaseema region and 880 coconut trees in 15 acres had already died due to this disease. He spent around Rs 80,000 to 1 lakh to get the test done. He advised the government to invest few lakhs to conduct such tests in future.
