Anil Kumble, the head coach of the Punjab Kings (PBKS), did not reveal anything about the franchise's captain on Sunday, but stated they are focusing on establishing a new group. Punjab spent a lot of money on all-rounders Liam Livingstone (INR 11.50 crores) and Odean Smith (INR 11.50 crores) on day two of the 2022 IPL Mega auction (INR 6 crores).

"You'd want to get some excellent players in a T20 format or whatever new squad you want to put together." Also, the focus of the leadership group was not just on the players we wanted to acquire. However, the franchise must also acquire certain leadership groups and create a new culture.

“We are very focused on building a new squad. This is a big auction and you have the opportunity to look at players who you believe can bring that on board. There is still work to do for all teams and really looking forward to closing that out and gearing up for the new season,” said Kumble in the virtual press conference.

Kumble went on to say that the mega auction's dynamics were unlike anything he'd ever seen before, and that finding players with ten teams in the mix was a huge challenge. "The demand is greater than the supply." However, the challenge is made more difficult by the presence of ten teams. It was really unusual because I had earlier participated in a couple of large mega auctions in 2011 and 2014, as well as smaller auctions before to this mega auction. This one has been very difficult and unique since every player, whoever he is pursuing, is after a large sum of money.

“The purse is dwindling and no matter what value you have in your purse, the auction dynamics are very, very different and you have to be nimble. That’s something we realised in the last one and a half days that you have to be even more nimble, including this auction than previous ones. Some of the Indian players, especially the fast bowlers, have been really happy for them. There has been a lot of demand for them and it’s wonderful that they have been well-rewarded for all the efforts.”

Kumble went on to say that his maiden mega auction (and third overall) with Punjab has been extremely rewarding. "We entered into the auction with the highest bid, but we've been really happy with how things have gone thus far." Despite the difficult auction climate, we were able to put together the team we wanted and are very close to achieving our goals.
