Odisha: Weather department issues alert for cyclone 'Amphan'

Bhubaneswar: Cyclonic storm Amphan can take a dangerous form in the Bay of Bengal. There is a possibility of this storm hitting the coast of Odisha and West Bengal. In view of the threat of cyclonic storm, the Odisha government has issued an alert in 12 coastal districts.

According to the Meteorological Department, there was a pressure zone in the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is slowly turning into a cyclone. The cyclone will move towards the coast of West Bengal and North Odisha in the northwest of Bay of Bengal from 17 May which may turn into a severe cyclonic storm on 18 May i.e. Monday. From the Meteorological Department, fishermen have been instructed not to go to the sea shore from the coasts of Odisha and Bengal between 18th and 20th. The fishermen who are present on the sea coast have also been instructed to return by May 17.

The Meteorological Department estimates that the speed of winds can remain up to 115 km per hour during the cyclone. According to the Meteorological Department, cyclonic storm Amfan is expected to cause light to moderate rain in coastal Odisha on May 18, while heavy rainfall is expected in some areas. Heavy rain has also been predicted in many places including Andaman and Nicobar Island.
