Meteorological Department issues alert for heavy rains in Mumbai

Mumbai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded its warning about rain. The IMD has issued an orange warning for Maharashtra, including Mumbai, along the Konkan coast. Where the 10-day Ganesh Puja has started in Maharashtra. On the other hand, the Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy rains in Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts of Maharashtra on Saturday.

A yellow alert has been issued in various areas for Mumbai and Thane on Sunday, along with an orange alert for Palghar, Raigad and Ratnagiri. IMD has warned that heavy rain is likely to cause flooding in low-lying areas and waterlogging may occur in large cities. Fishermen have been advised not to approach the north Maharashtra coast by 25 August.

The Meteorological Department has also warned of short term disruptions in services of municipal services like water, electricity, etc. and local trains in Mumbai. The Meteorological Department said that much older buildings are feared to fall apart, trees and local landslides may occur in high altitude areas. Mumbai has recorded the highest rainfall in the last 10 years this August and is close to breaking the record for the most rainfall (46mm) in a month of the decade.
