USM-Indore Seminar Series: After a two-hour webinar for the parents of St. Joseph’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore on 12th December, parents appreciated the practical tips given by the speaker, Fr. Varghese Alengaden. Some of the parents promised that they would spend more time with their children as part of their parenting.

The webinar was organized by the Universal Solidarity Movement (USM) Indore. 230 parents attended the webinar from 6.00 to 8.00 pm. Fr. Varghese Alengaden, the speaker, in the introductory part briefly explained the two wrong tendencies found in the students: increasing propensity for suicide when met with challenging situations and growing crime rate among the youth. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 28 children are committing suicide a day in India.

In order to make the parents understand their role in the education of their children Fr. Varghese explained the definition of education given by Swami Vivekananda. According to Swami Vivekananda, the goals of education are to build character, to increase the strength of willpower and expand the intellect. As a result, a person will be able to stand on his own feet or become self-dependent.

1. Spend quality time in the family every day, especially with children.

2. Know the friends of the children; crimes and drug consumption are often due to the influence of unhealthy friendship.

3. Help children to have their own dream/vision for their life rather than imposing on them the unfulfilled dreams of parents.

4.  Train the children to respect their teachers. Never speak ill of the teachers in front of the children.

5. Create a cordial atmosphere at home and respect women in the family. Avoid quarrels in front of the children.

6. Getting honest parents to children is the greatest wealth. The greatest wealth the parents can hand over to their children is ‘sanskar’.

7. Help children to compete with themselves and not with others and aim to do their best instead of becoming first.

8. Don’t make your children money-making machines, but visionaries who will be leaving a legacy to humanity.

During the interactive session that followed, many parents appreciated the webinar, especially the practical tips and said that they would adopt some of them.

The principal of the school Sr. Lidia extended a warm welcome to the resource person, Fr. Varghese and the participants. She also profusely thanked Fr. Varghese for inspiring and motivating the parents, and the parents for spending time to attend the webinar with discipline and attention.
