New Delhi: Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal has topped other states in terms of growth. West Bengal has achieved a growth rate of 12.58 per cent in FY 2018-19, which is the highest. On the other hand, States like Goa, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh were found to be very weak in terms of growth rate. The growth rate data of 18 states and two union territories for the financial year 2018-19 are available on the website of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, which has been collected from the Directorate of Economic and Statistics of the respective State Governments.

Of the states that have the growth rate data available for the financial year 2018-19, the growth rate of four states - West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Telangana - has been more than 10 per cent. West Bengal has a growth rate of 12.58 per cent which is the highest in all the States. This is probably the first time that Bengal's growth rate has reached double digit.

Bengal's growth rate in FY 2017-18 was 8.88 per cent. The surge in West Bengal's growth rate will give a big relief to the state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the assembly elections are due in the state after two years. Mamata Banerjee would definitely like to cash it in. She can use it to counter Modi's development image. Mamata and the Centre's confrontation is evident. The BJP's performance in Bengal in the recent Lok Sabha elections has made it more interesting.
