The Myanmar-based terrorist organisation NSCN (K-YA) has freed two construction workers from Assam and Bihar, police reported on Sunday. They were freed 12 days after being kidnapped in Arunachal Pradesh's Longding district. On Saturday night, the NSCN-Yung K's Aung group freed the two captives — Hiren Konch from Assam and Ramashis Mahato from Bihar — on the India-Myanmar border, according to police.

Longding district Superintendent of Police Vikram Harimohan Meena said the two were rescued after "extraordinary efforts" by the police. He stated that both workers appear to be in good health, but that they are undergoing medical checks.

According to police, Banphua Wangpan, Hiren Konch, and Ramashis Mahato were working on the Pumao-Langkhow road in the Longding district. They were sleeping at a tent near the construction site where they were kidnapped on January 31 by terrorists. One of the three hostages, Banphua Wangpan, was freed the next day, while the other two were held at the NSCN's hideout (K-YA).

The kidnapping was thought to be for ransom, according to the police. The militants were said to have demanded a ransom of Rs 4 crore. The NSCN-K (Yung Aung) is based in Myanmar and is involved in illegal operations in various areas of eastern Arunachal Pradesh. It is the only Naga militant organisation that is not part of the ongoing peace negotiations with the Indian government.
