What is cancer and how it starts, know symptoms
World Cancer Day is observed on 4 February. Every year, a large number of children ranging from newborn to 18 years are falling victim to cancer. Many times the symptoms of cancer are not directly visible in children, due to which this deadly disease is detected late. As soon as the symptoms of cancer are detected, cancer can also be treated soon. However, there are some ways, which, if considered, can be detected soon. Dr. Vikas Dua, Additional Director and HOD, Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Bonamaro Transplant of Fortis Memorial Research Institute, has described four major cancers in children and their symptoms.
What is cancer and how it starts, know symptoms
1. Acute leukemia cancer: Leukemia is the most common cancer in children. It usually catches children between 2 and 4 years of age. Leukemia is bone marrow. Among children with leukemia, 3 out of four cases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia occur. There is one remaining case of acute myeloid leukemia.
Symptoms of leukemia cancer: -
- Bone and joint pain
- Fatigue, weakness
- Bleeding
- prolonged fever
- Loss of weight.
2. Brain tumor: Brain tumor or tumor in the nervous system is the second major cancer in children. There are many types of brain tumors and all of them have different symptoms and treatment. When it comes to brain tumors in children, it starts from the lower part of their brain. Although there is a difference in brain tumors occurring in children and adults, the symptoms are similar.

Symptoms of brain tumors: -
- Headache (with morning vomiting)
- Dizziness
- Problem in balance
- Problems with seeing, hearing or speaking
- Frequent vomiting.
3. Neuroblastoma Cancer: This disease starts from underdeveloped nerve cells in newborns and very young children. Mostly this disease occurs in children below 5 years of age. This disease usually starts from the adrenal gland.
Symptoms of Neuroblastoma: -
- deteriorating balance.
- Changing eyes (keeping eyes moist).
- Pain in various parts of the body.
