New Delhi: Veteran wrestler Deepak Punia, who won the silver medal for the country at the World Championships, has become famous all over the country today. When he started wrestling, his goal was to get a job through it so that he could take care of his family. Punia was looking for work and in 2016 he got a chance to work in the Indian Army as a soldier. But Olympic medalist winning wrestler Sushil Kumar suggested him to focus on the big goal except for the small things and then Deepak did not look back.

Two-time Olympic medalist Sushil helped Deepak find a sponsor and said, 'Make wrestling your priority, the job will run after you. He followed the advice of his senior wrestler at Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi and achieved several major titles in the age group within three years. He became World Cadet Champion in 2016 and became Junior World Champion only last month. He is only the fourth Indian player to become a junior champion who ended the 18-year title drought.

Never had the money to buy shoes, now won a medal for the country

Deepak's father travelled about 60 kilometres daily from 2015 and brought him milk and fruits from Jhajjar in Haryana to Delhi. He loves to drink milk since childhood and is known as 'kettle wrestler' in the village. There is also an interesting story behind the name of 'kettle wrestler'. The sarpanch of the village once gave Deepak the kettle to drink milk and he finished it in one go. In this way, he finished four kettles of milk one by one, after which he started calling him as the 'kettle wrestler'.
