CHENNAI: Karman Kaur Thandi of India was defeated from the women's singles competition of the Chennai Open 2022 WTA 250 tennis competition on Wednesday after falling to Eugenie Bouchard of Canada in the pre-quarterfinals at the SDAT Stadium in Chennai.

The Indian tennis player lost to Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, the Wimbledon 2014 champion, 2-6, 6-7 after defeating eighth seed Chloe Paquet in the first round.

Karman got out to a good start, keeping Bouchard on her toes with her forceful ground strokes. However, the Indian was unable to identify the winners and was destroyed in the first game. Bouchard won the opening set despite being broken once thanks to some unforced mistakes from Thandi as she advanced through the gears rapidly.

In the second set, the 24-year-old Indian played considerably better, matching the Canadian shot for stroke. In the sixth game, she pulled off a key victory to establish a 4-2 lead, which she later extended to 5-2.

However, Eugenie Bouchard rallied to win the following three games and tie the match. After the set went to a tiebreak, Bouchard won the match because to her superior angles.

The fourth seeded Tatjana Maria or Grand Slam semifinalist Nadia Podoroska will be the Canadian's next opponent. Karman will now partner with fellow Indian Rutuja Bhosale to play in the doubles, on the other hand.

Ankita Raina and Rosalie van der Hoek of the Netherlands were defeated 1-6, 4-6 by Anastasia Gasanova and Oksana Selekhmeteva, and thus were eliminated from the doubles competition.

Ankita had already exited the singles competition after falling to German Tatjana Maria in the first round.

Riya Bhatia and Sharrmadaa Baluu from India also dropped out of the doubles match after falling to Peangtarn Plipuech and Moyuka Uchijima 2-6, 5-7.
