Kolkata: In the midst of the ongoing discourse surrounding the 'young generation of politicians vs old guard' in West Bengal's political arena, Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress, has advocated for the implementation of an age cap in politics. He highlighted the "decline in productivity" associated with ageing as the rationale behind this proposal.

Abhishek Banerjee expressed, "Whether in politics or any other field, I believe there should be an upper age limit. The work that an individual at the age of 30, 35, or even 50 can do, a person at 80 cannot." While acknowledging the significance of seniors and their valuable experience, he clarified, "I am not blaming anyone. Veterans and seniors are very important due to their experience." 

Abhishek Banerjee's statement emerges within the context of the 'young versus old guard' debate that surfaced within the Trinamool Congress in late November. Contrary to Abhishek Banerjee's stance, TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee advocated for collaboration between the younger generation of politicians and the old guard to form a formidable force.

In a recent address, Mamata Banerjee underscored the imperative to fight until the last breath. She called for unity, emphasizing that both the young and old should join forces to become a strong and united front. During a party event at Netaji Indoor Stadium, she specifically encouraged TMC MP Saugata Roy, aged 74, to continue fighting like a "Bengal tiger" for as long as he is alive.

Mamata Banerjee emphasized, "We are all equals. The younger generation of politicians should respect the old guard. Sougata da (Roy) says at times that he has gotten old. What age? The heart has no age. As long as we are alive, we will fight like the royal Bengal tiger."
