Guwahati: An outbreak of Japanese encephalitis is being witnessed after the floods in Assam. With the death of three more people on Friday due to the disease, the total number of people who lost their lives due to the disease in the state has reached 47. Information in this regard has been given in the official bulletin. According to the National Health Mission (NHM), seven new cases of Japanese encephalitis were reported on Friday, taking the total number of people confirmed to have contracted the disease so far in the province.

According to the bulletin, one patient each lost his life in Barpeta, Chirang and Darrang districts on Friday. The NHM has reported that the seven new cases reported on Friday include 2 from Jorhat and 1 each from Bongaigaon, Charaideo, Darrang, Dibrugarh and Kokrajhar. According to the bulletin, all the districts of the province except South Salmara, Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong are affected by the disease. Nagaon has reported the highest number of 44 cases of Japanese encephalitis. Apart from this, 39 patients have been confirmed in Jorhat and 34 in Golaghat. According to the NHM, in view of the increasing number of cases, all the nine medical colleges and 10 district hospitals in the state have been kept ready with ICU and laboratory testing facilities.

Assam is flooded in the same way every year. Till recently, about 3,79,200 people were affected by floods in Bajli, Vishwanath, Cachar, Chirang, Hailakandi, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sivasagar and Tamulpur districts. However, gradually the flood water started receding in these districts.
