Amritsar: Warrant has been issued against 930 defaulter farmers in Firozpur district of Punjab. At the same time, farmer organizations have warned to start an agitation to stop the arrest of any farmer who is in debt. Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Samiti (KMSC) state president Satnam Singh Pannu has said on Thursday that the government should waive the loans of poor farmers in the same way as the huge loans taken by big corporate houses were waived.

KMSC leader Khalara Singh said that farmers are already facing huge losses due to low yield of food grains. He said, 'Now the state government is harassing them, which we will not tolerate.' Sources said that 930 farmers of the district, to whom warrants have been issued, have outstanding loans of Rs 34.36 crore in their names for a long time. When contacted, Assistant Registrar Cooperative Society's Swaranjit Singh said that though warrants have been issued, no farmer has been arrested so far.

He said that, 'Warrants have been issued only to those farmers who have not repaid their loan to the land mortgage bank for a long time. Also, a warrant has been issued against him that he had taken loan for construction of house or any other work other than agriculture.
