The Indian Athletics Federation has condoled the demise of long-distance runner Harichand. Two-time Olympian (1976, 1980), 69-year-old Harichand passed away on Sunday evening. He won gold medals in the 1978 Asian Games in 5000m and 10000m and has also won a gold medal in the 10000m at the 1975 Asian Athletics Championships.

His in 10000 meters is 28:48:72 The national record remained for 32 years which was later broken by Surendra Singh. AFI President Adile Sumariwala said in a condolence message – Hari Chand, my partner in the 1980 Olympics, was a legend of Indian sports. I and the entire sports world is saddened by his death. This is an irreparable loss to the Games.

Hailing from Gorewaha village in the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab, Harichand had won the 3000m for the first time in the National Junior Athletics Championships in 1970. He has become the chief constable in the Central Reserve Police Force to practice with good runners. Despite being of short stature, he won the long-distance race with his own strength.
