Ahmedabad: After the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, social activists Teesta Setalvad and RB Sreekumar in the Gujarat riots cases, now former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sanjiv Bhatt has also been arrested. The Ahmedabad Crime Branch team arrested Sanjeev Bhatt, who has been lodged in Banaskantha jail for a long time, on Tuesday. Sanjiv Bhatt has been arrested on charges of embezzlement of money and forged papers.

It may be recalled that Teesta Setalvad and Sreekumar were arrested by the Crime Branch of Ahmedabad Police on the basis of an FIR lodged in the past few days. Sreekumar and Setalvad were arrested by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad from their residence in Mumbai. Along with this, former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, who is serving a life term in a case of custodial death in a jail in Palanpur in Banaskantha district, is also accused in the case.

The Supreme Court, while hearing Zakia Jafri's plea challenging the SIT report to give a clean chit to the then Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, had said that Teesta Setalvad was engaged in proving her self-interest. The apex court had also referred to the filing of false affidavits on behalf of Sanjiv Bhatt and R B Sreekumar.
