The nursing staff at the India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will go on an indefinite strike starting Tuesday in response to the suspension of Harish Kajila, the President of the AIIMS Nurses Union.

The nurses' union has urged that Kajla's suspension be lifted immediately. "In response to your unilateral decision to suspend Harish Kajila, president of AllMS Nurses Union, without even citing proper reasons, the union has called an emergency executive meeting and decided to go on indefinite strike from 8 AM on April 26 demanding immediate revocation of Harish Kumar Kajla's suspension and stopping of all kinds of retaliatory measures against union executive," the union wrote in a letter to AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria.

"Throughout this issue, the union has been receptive and open to voicing our legitimate concerns and viewpoints. Unfortunately, we were not informed or contacted in any way, forcing us to embark on an extended strike in order to protect our members' basic rights. We'd like to remind you that any consequences, if any, will be exclusively the responsibility of the undemocratic AllMS administration " the letter read.

The nursing officer Harish Kajila and the Resident Doctors Association had a disagreement on April 23 at AIIMS. The nurse personnel in the main operation theatre were protesting due to a lack of staffing and late working hours.

However, the Association of Resident Doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, responded to the incident on social media this morning, writing, "To take AIIMS to new heights, doctors and nurses collaborated in harmony and with mutual respect. The holistic treatment of patients is impossible to envision without appropriate nursing care. The RDA AIIMS is speaking out against this unjust behaviour, not against any individual or union."
