Politics in Assam has gained momentum. Assam Congress is all set to form 'Mahajoot' with ally parties before the Assembly elections 2021. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Ripun Bora verified that Congress is likely to form an alliance with parties like AIUDF, headed by Maulana Badaruddin Ajmal, Left, and some ethnic groups in Assam to take on the BJP in the assembly elections slated to be held next year.

The APCC chief also stated that out of 126 in the state, his party will contest about 90 seats and the rest 36 seats will be contested by the others. He also radiated confidence that the next Chief Minister will be from the Congress party. ''We are ready to fight the next Assembly elections under 'Mahajoot' where the Congress will be the majority stakeholder while AIUDF, Left and some ethnic groups will be a part of it,'' said Bora. Meanwhile, the AIUDF and a new regional party established by Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan have already agreed to fight together with Congress against the ruling BJP.

The APCC Chief who has been performing to form the group has conveyed the idea of 'Mahajoot' to the party high command about the initial talks with the like-minded parties and got a by and large approval of it. As of now, it is deemed that Bora will be the front-runner for the Chief ministership if the Congress is voted to power. However, he made it clear that no one is projected as a chief ministerial candidate and it will be decided by the MLAs after the polls along with the approval of the high command.
